Pastiche

I was tasked to create two posters for a social or political movement of my choice using an art style from a different era. I chose the Chicano movement from the 1960’s and it aimed to combat the racism Chicanos and immigrants faced at the time and to gain fair labor laws.

The art style that I chose was the WPA (or the Workers Progression Administration) style created by the US in the 1930’s. This art style was created to promote employment in the US when they saw a big surge in the unemployment rates. I researched the movement and made sure to use popular poster sayings used for those times.

Techniques & Style

To stick to the WPA art style, I made sure to use a limited color palette. I also want both of the posters to be able to work separately and together, so I used the same color palette. WPA posters were known to have unique and interesting use of type, so I also made sure that the typography was eye-catching. I wanted my illustration to be both gruesome but also welcoming to those who may be facing the consequence of racism and the unfair labor laws.

Personal Connection

I like to create work that I feel personally connected to me. As a Chicano and Mexican-American, I come from a long line of labor workers that lived through before, during, and after the movement. Some of my family is still working in the field and to this day I am an advocate for fairer pay, better working conditions, and overall more appreciation for those who work tirelessly to provide us fruit and vegetables.
